Managing by Storying Around
“This book is timeless, because storytelling’s power is timeless. But it’s timely, too, very timely. The marketplace is demanding that we burn the policy manuals and knock off the incessant memo writing: there’s just no time. It also demands we empower everyone to constantly take initiatives. It turns out stories are a—if not the—leadership answer to both issues.” Tom Peters

Once Told, They’re Gold
Where does David Armstrong find his stories? In the same places he suggests you look for yours—along the halls of your offices and factories. And in the eyes and on the faces of the employees who come through your front door every day. According to David Armstrong, “Thar’s gold in them thar stories.”

Fun and Creativity
Do golf carts painted to resemble lions, tigers, horses and other animal speedsters help kick start urgency in the workplace? Watch this video and find out for yourself. But here’s a hint: Armstrong’s “Consider it done” mentality lines up perfectly with the growing need for speed and hustle in a business environment growing increasingly competitive. Speed and efficiency are important parts of the Armstrong culture, and they’re clearly evident as you tour a workplace that’s both fun and effective.

Tradition and Change
Someone once said, “The biggest risk is not to take one.” That very thought may have been in the mind of a young accountant at Armstrong International who “stole” an office because he hated his cubicle. Although it may have been a crime in other staid corporations, at Armstrong his courage and creativity won him—you guessed it—a nice office with a window. This simple story speaks volumes about how David Armstrong views individuality, imagination and creative risk-taking.

Self-Management
There are no time clocks at Armstrong International, but it doesn’t matter. You’ll know when someone is late for work because every other worker on the floor will “hammer in” the guilty party—even when he is the president’s son. This grueling ritual consists of employees hammering on a metal workbench until the latecomer has arrived at his workstation—a long, painful and noisy walk, indeed. It’s a powerful example of how peer pressure helps coworkers support and enforce self-management.
